Live Battlefield

A multi-player game of Battleship, with a real-life component, that can be played through the a web interface and the Telegram messaging app:

The inspiration for this came froma game I co-organized for my scout grioup in 2025. Back then, we automated what we could with Google Sheets and Forms and drew the maps by hand while it was streamed via a webcam. That allowed for some nice shenanigans and interesting stuff going on. But the feeling that most of this could be fully automated didn't quite pass. But, who has time to make that? Alas, that of course never happened.

Until, early 2026 of course, when the time needed to take on such a project dropped to very low, with the advent of coding agents that really worked, really well. I spent a Sunday morning (still in bed, IIRC) typing an outline of the game's rules, ship types, event types, specified I wanted to use event sourcing so I could debug the state over time as events replayed, and that I wanted to deploy via a Docker image.

All in all, a prompt of maybe a hundred lines. I entered that into OpenCode with it's default Big Pickle model and went for breakfast.

After answering some questions over the next few hours (also via SSH while I was waiting in the lobby of the pool during for swimming classes, coding agents are addictive somehow), I got a playable game!

Over the next months, I occasionally tweaked and extended the game, added the quiz mode besides the original locations mode, made things editable, added automatic placement of the ships, etc etc.

Check out the (source on GitHub). Mind you, I mostly did not look at the source code at all, intentionally, for this application. Since then, I also started using OpenCOde with various models at work as well when I of course do check the result. Locations
